In 1993 I did some research on the Skytrain and LRT debate in Metro Vancouver.
Outside of Canada and the United States with the exception of Quebec the LRT is called a Tram.
I found there was a difference in travel time between Skytrain (Linear Induction Motor) and a Tram. Skytrain had a higher average speed and faster travel times and as the distances between the city centres in Metro Vancouver were long, it made sense to use Skytrain to connect the city centres and not a Tram.
Travel time from Park Royal to Metrotown, Surrey Centre to White Rock Transit Centre, and Haney Place to Langley City Centre is 20 minutes faster on Skytrain with the linear induction motor than a Tram.
The same scenario applies in Toronto and Montreal.
